Things to See & Do in Jinja

Follow the links below or scroll further down the page for details on some of the many interesting tourist attractions in Jinja

Bujagali Falls

The Bujagali Falls lie about 9 km to the north of Jinja. One of the most frequented tourist spots, it attracts visitors by the drove. The roaring white falls, located about 10 km down the River Nile, gets its name from an African spirit called Bujagali, which supposedly sashays down the river on a piece of bark cloth. The falls are famed for white-water rafting. On the first day of white-water rafting tours you'll cover much ground; an extra rapid, the Novocain rapid, is thrown in at the end. On the second day, four rapids will be covered - Nile Special, Kula Shaker, Hair of the Dog and Malalu. Additionally, you will also visit a rapid called Weleba.

Those inclined to be sportier can indulge in white-water kayaking or take lessons in shooting rapids and Eskimo-roll. You can also enjoy the sunset cruises for larger groups and families. Quad-biking trips are also offered here.

Mabira Forest Reserve

Covering more than 300 sq km along the Kampala-Jinja road, the Mabira Forest Reserve is one of the biggest surviving stands of indigenous forests in Central Uganda. Since it is near the country's two largest cities, it provides excellent opportunities for tourism. The forest, consisting of pieces of open grassland and papyrus swamp valleys, has more than 200 species of identified trees.

The lovely walking trails afford excellent opportunities to glimpse the white colobus, red-tailed monkey, blue duiker monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabey. Bird watchers can enjoy the company of forest species like Weyn's weaver, the African grey parrot, hornbill species, rare blue swallows and sunbirds. The reserve's fringed pond is also reputed to have one of the country's best birding sites.

Source of the Nile Gardens (West bank of the Nile)

The Source of the Nile Gardens is one of Uganda's top attractions. The peaceful gardens stretching for miles house hundreds of birds and a large number of monkeys. The Source of the Nile Gardens, along with the Speke Memorial Site, covers over 17 acres of land. It was here that John Hanning Speke on July 28, 1862 claimed that he could perceive 'old father Nile' erupt from its source - the Victoria Nyanza. To mark this important event, an obelisk monument was constructed on the Nile's western bank. The view as recorded by Speke has not lost its grandeur, beauty or enigma - the swelling cascade of the spectacular river lives on today even though the Owen Falls' hydro-electric dam has hushed the boisterous Rippon Falls. Standing where Speke stood, you get a beautiful view of Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake and the source of the River Nile.

Satya Narayan Temple

You can also visit the Hindu Satya Narayan Temple containing shrines to the Shitla Mata and Ambaji Shankar Bhagwan. In the outer compound is a bronze bust of Mahatma Gandhi. In 1997, this was unveiled by the Indian Prime Minister I.K. Gujral, along with the President. In memory of Gandhi's association with Jinja, October 2nd is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti. In fact, in 1948, a handful of Gandhi's ashes was immersed in the waters of the Nile. In 1972, the Asians were expelled by Amin and only a handful of Hindus were left behind at Jinja. During this time of exile, the hall was used by the local people for dances, social gatherings and even for accommodation.

Owen Falls Dam

The Owen Falls Dam, built in 1954, is the source of electricity for most of Uganda and a large part of Kenya. During the tumultuous times of Iddi Amin Dada, a team of committed engineers kept the generator going almost without any disruption. As you take the main road from Kampala, you will pass the dam and get the opportunity to witness first-hand the beautiful falls that it creates. Make sure though that you procure a seat on the correct side.

Nile Brewery Tour

A complimentary tour run on Tuesdays and Thursdays depending on demand, this tour offers you a free beer, and is an ideal way to spend a rainy afternoon. Watching how the Ugandans operate a brewery proves to be an interesting experience.

Booze Cruise
A popular and rather recent introduction to tourist itineraries, this cruise on the Lake Victoria during dusk allows you to enjoy the beauty of the sun setting over the waters and the fishing boats aglow with paraffin lamps.

Samuka Island Retreat – The Bird Sanctuary

The Sumaka Island Retreat is one of Uganda's most favoured getaways. Situated just an hour and a half away from Kampala, this island sanctuary for birds is an idyllic spot that boasts over 50 species of resident and migratory birds. It is also reputed to be one of the two best breeding sites for little egrets and long-tailed cormorants. From the Rumours Pub and Sports Bar at the Source of the Nile, you can take a boat ride to this island. With over 12 acres of pristine natural beauty, this 'sanctuary' for birds will woo you too with its serene ambience, delicious cuisine, comfortable accommodation, hospitable staff and personalized attention.
