Kayak the Nile are based at Nile River Explorers campsite, Bujagali Falls. This is 8km downstream from the source of the Nile. This location boasts no less than 5 awesome play spots as well as 7 major class 5 channels. The camp offers flat pools and small rapids which are an ideal location for teaching kayak schools.
The White Nile has up to seven times the volume of the Zambezi. It thunders between heavily forested islands and then leaps wildly into a series of spectacular drops. The roar of the rapids drifts upstream with the gentle breeze and along the warm pools in the equatorial sunshine.
Jinja lies approximately 80km east of Kampala, and overlooks the ‘Source of the Nile'. Despite being one of Uganda's larger towns, Jinja remains a pleasant and breezy place to spend some time. It is fast becoming renowned as the ‘adventure capital' of East Africa, and people flock here to bungee jump and experience the roaring white water rapids on rafting, kayaking, and even jet boat tours!
- Duration: 7 day(s)
- Location: Jinja, Bujagali Falls
Day 2: Choose and fit out our kayaks for the week followed by a small tasted session on the flat waters below the campsite. This session will allow you to feel comfortable in the kayak and cover basic strokes, capsize drills and rescues. In the evening, we have a lecture and slide show about kayaking on the Nile and various rivers in the region.
Day 3: The day begins by heading upstream to the Source of the Nile, where we launch ourselves into our first white water section. We will learn about running rivers, group safety and river reading. In the evening, we hold a rolling session in the swimming pool at the campsite.
Day 4: Today we head downstream to Kalagala Falls, where we start to paddle some slightly more demanding water. Exploring all the channels, we expand on our river running techniques. We then make camp at the Hairy Lemon - a beautiful mid-river island. The island boasts natural pools which offer the ideal place to perfect those Eskimo rolls.
Day 5: After a brief skills session in the morning, we head out on some of the rapids surrounding the island and move downstream raking on some nice big volume class 3 rapids. We then shuttle back to the Hairy Lemon for the night.
Day 6: We head back upstream to Kalagala Falls where we run this section once again, but take on slightly bigger volume channels. This will be the ultimate test for your new found skills! In the evening, we transfer back to Bujagali Falls to our accommodation for the final night. After a bbq, we watch our final sunset over the Nile river.
Day 7: You will be transferred by our Kayak the Nile representative to Entebbe or for onward travel.
The above itinerary is intended as an outline. We tailor the course to suit your requirements and the varying water levels of the day.
